New Mexico (Albuquerque, Santa Fe, Taos)
May 2008
We flew to Albuquerque, picked up the rental car, and headed for the Fairfield Inn for the first night.
After a good nights sleep, we headed for Santa Fe, our primary destination. We studied several maps and
brochures and decided to take the Turquoise Trail instead of the interstate. It was about an hour longer
but was very scenic. We stayed several days in Santa Fe and visited other areas on day or side trips such
as Taos, the Kit Carson Museum, Bandelier National Monument, and others. Then we returned to Albuquerque
for a couple of days. In Albuquerque, we stayed at Kirkland AFB and in Santa Fe, we stayed at Garretts
Desert Inn which was very close to downtown and the square.
The first thing we discovered on the Turquoise Trail National Scenic Byway, its official name, was the little
town of Madrid where they filmed the movie "Wild Hogs" with John Travolta and William H. Macy. It was like
one main street just a few (2 or 3) blocks long. The locals seemed to have enjoyed having the film crew there.
